Europe - still a dynamic market

There can be no doubt that the electronic components industry has undergone dramatic change in recent years. Looking at the astonishing growth in the manufacturing in Asian Pacific countries and most notably China a casual observer can be forgiven for surmising that the outlook for the European Electronics Industry is not looking good.

Such a view fails to recognise some of the other fundamental changes that are occurring in the global electronics market. Vast populations in Asian Pacific countries, South America, and Africa are begin to have access to mass consumer products and the number of applications in which electronic systems are being used is expanding exponentially. In the period 2003 to 2006 total European electronic component sales via distributors grew from $11.5Bn to $14Bn* – a compound growth rate of over 10%; hardly a sign of a dying industry.

Europe has proven credentials for design excellence and many of the exciting products that result for our domestic IP will be manufactured in Europe, destined for both the domestic and Global markets. Silicon Design is dedicated to taking the new generation application specific standard integrated circuits to designers and manufacturers this new-wave of consumer applications, initially concentrating on…….

Security
Rising crime and threat of terrorist attack is driving a huge rise in the number of electronics-dependent security applications. European design companies are at the forefront of virtually every area from keyless door-entry systems to bio-medical scanners for top-level identity verification.
Cockpit Automotive
One of the biggest global growth sectors is expected to remain the automotive sector, with advanced electronic systems finding their way into an increasing percentage of the cars produced. For example, a simple rear view mirror can be replaced by a rear mounted camera and LCD display to enable a driver to have a better view and less distraction from passengers in the rear of the car. Energy efficiency and emission control are also key drivers particularly in top-end models.

White Goods

The cost of freighting large but relatively low-ticket consumer goods such as washing machines, refrigerators and freezers over unnecessarily long distances means that Europe will remain a centre for the design and manufacture of White Goods for the domestic markets in the foreseeable future. The fridge/freezer focus will remain on energy efficiency whilst manufacturers of washing machines are particularly interested in control systems for the 3-phase electric motors that are replacing the old parallel winding, single-phase power units.

Coms/Datacoms (fixed and wireless)

Wi-Fi and super fast broadband internet speeds are set to enable new coms/datacoms services such as Voice over IP and the delivery of 3G driven Informatics such as maps, traffic information, share alerts, news etc. Europe will remain a centre of excellence for the development of new featured mobile phones, in particular mobile TV.

Other rapidly expanding applications areas currently being addressed by Silicon Design include low-end robotics and medical/healthcare products, which range from personal blood pressure monitors to hospital equipment. The organisation has positioned itself to identify and exploit other key application areas as the come to the fore.
